The grassroots world was buzzing a few months ago when RJ Davis announced he was running with the Renaissance, and for good reason.

The 5-foot-11  guard from Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains, New York, is an absolute gamechanger in the backcourt. The ultra-quick and shifty point guard was named Westchester/Putnam Player of the Year, leading the CHSAA in scoring at 25.4 points per game. He added per-game averages of 7.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 34 percent from three. He's scored 1810 points in 89 career varsity games, already holding the school scoring record for Stepinac.

Davis should slide in and play a huge role for the Renaissance, and he will have the opportunity to play alongside some talented players.

We caught up with Davis before the circuit tips, asking him about his thoughts on the Renaissance, his role within the program and their goals for the season.

Q: This is your year playing on the 17u circuit in the EYBL. What are you looking forward to about this opportunity?

RJ Davis: This is my last year of playing AAU, I’m looking forward to compete with other talent and showcase my abilities.

What do you like about your team thus far?

RJD: I like how my team bonds on and off the court. We are still getting to know one another and build that chemistry to make a run for peach jam. We are a gritty team and a talented group.

What is your role going to be this year for the Renaissance?

RJD: My role is to be a leader and do everything my team needs me to do in order to win games.

The Peach Jam Championship is the ultimate goal for every team on the EYBL circuit. Why do you think you guys are capable of taking that home?

RJD: With our size, speed, and talent we can compete at a very high level. It’s important for us to play together which will make our capability of winning Peach Jam that much stronger.

What do you think separates your team from the rest?

RJD: I would say our talent and work ethic separates us from others. Practices are intense, detailed and we learn from mistakes. Plus, we have a supportive coaching staff who helps us every day with minor issues to help us improve throughout the season.
